Aberaeron Sevens

Sevens Challenge Beached as Injuries strike

Wales Deaf made their debut on the Sevens scene during this weekend's Aberaeron Festival of Rugby held on the shores of Cardigan Bay.

Keen to make use of their pacy squad, they were drawn in a tough pool that contained one of the tournament favourites Pentre Flamingos, Kidwelly and Merthyr.

In their first match versus the Flamingos, Wales Deaf showed early promise against a side containing experienced Sevens specialists. In an entertaining encounter, three tries by Nigel Francis, Celyn Ashton and Gareth John weren't enough to prevent Wales Deaf going down by 33 points to 19.

Kidwelly were next up for Wales Deaf, who lost hooker James Evans with a knee injury early in the first half. Wales were further hampered with injuries to wingers Nigel Francis and Gareth John and eventually went down to a strong Kidwelly side by 35 points to 7. Gareth John scored a try and kicked the conversion.

These injuries hampered preparations for the final pool match versus Merthyr and the team reluctantly withdrew from this year's tournament.
